Tourism in Mexico has experienced a big boom this year as more and more Americans flocked to the country’s beautiful beaches and adorable towns. It is easy to begin to feel a bit touristed-out but don’t despair, there are some amazing places to see that very few other tourists make it to!

Orizaba

While not exactly a “secret” (Tangerine Travel did a vlog about this place. You can watch it here.), Orizaba is definitely far off the normal tourist radar. How it has remained that way is a bit of a wonder because the town is wonderful! Surrounded by mountains and oozing with colonial charm, Orizaba also has a plethora of free museums, botanical gardens with some funky statues and a river walk that has its own zoo! Best of all, it is only a 4 hour drive from Mexico City!

Veracruz

As Mexico’s oldest port, Veracruz offers an interesting combination of beautiful colonial buildings, some fabulous turn-of-the-century hotels and a beautiful malecon. The port area is small, safe and easily manageable on foot with a ton of restaurants and hotels. You can even take a short boat ride through the harbor offering a close up view of the fort for just $5. The beaches along the malecon certainly aren’t the best in Mexico but if you want to experienced a laid-back party-vibe, there is no better place!

Durango

I decided to stop in Durango while traveling between Guanajuato and Chihuahua and I had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find a gorgeous little city with a pedestrian area full of bars, shops and restaurants. Interconnecting plazas feature beautiful churches and colonial architecture and the people are warm and welcoming. Although it is a bit out of the way from most of Mexico’s top tourist attractions, it is just a short hop, skip and a jump from Mazatlan!

El Fuerte

This tiny town is one of the stops on the Copper Canyon train (El Chepe) and is a great little place to spend a few days. The main square is lined with restaurants and shops and the town has its own fort with a charming little museum. El Fuerte is just a short bus ride from Los Mochis which is a major transport hub on the Pacific coast. If you are feeling adventurous, it is definitely worth checking out!

Zacatecas

Located about halfway between San Luis Potosi and Durango, Zacatecas is a glorious little hillside city with spectacular churches and its own funicular that can whisk you from one mountain top to the other. With houses clinging to the hillsides and and hidden plazas, the city is great to wander around. Make sure to save enough time to pop in and out of the many bars and restaurants in the alleyways!

  • Krissy. It is your brother. I have another cool opportunity if you want this thing to take off. Hope you are well. You have my email.

  • It’s your brother. You have not spoken to me for 10 years now. I have reached out to you in every method I know how. So, might as well try here again.

All I know from the last time we talked was that you were angry about not getting bequeathed Dad’s frequent flyer miles from his estate.

I cannot understand that level of hatred for something so meaningless. First, they weren’t mine to provide. They were effectively gone with his passing. Second, I gave you miles from my account double anything available in his account, so you and your husband could go to his funeral, That saved you thousands of dollars and worth more then you could ever save using his miles. Finally, if I could Brest out he miles, they weren’t in increments that could not even be used by us. Only one had enough miles for a single ticket.

I get mother wanted us to never have a relationship and I imagine that has a lot to do with your frequent estrangements. You felt the same way about Dad and that all worked out. Heck, you dedicated this blog to him.

I tried to reach out to you through mother. I had contracted Coronavirus and wanted to have a chance to speak to you with it got worse. She would not make that connection during a pandemic. She claims not to meddle in our lives.

So, here I am trying again after a decade. I always wanted to have a chance to travel with you, so we could honor Dad. That was all he really wanted was for us to be together. And for us, the only opportunity for that was travel.

    Love,

    Your brother, Erich
