I recently said goodbye to one of the loves of my life – Mexico.   I was there for almost a year and I am grateful for every minute I got to spend there.  At times it was rough due to some crazy/bizarre circumstances but then I would see another amazing side of this wonderful place and I knew that I was where I was meant to be.

Mexico is a place that welcomed me when all other countries had shut their borders.  Strangers on the streets would say hello – even during a pandemic – and were always willing to give a helping hand when I was trying to get around with nearly non-existent Spanish.

Many people have asked me what is so special about Mexico?  Why do I love it?  I sometimes don’t even know how to answer.

Is it…….

the brightly colored buildings of Guanajuato / the sparkling blue ocean of the Caribbean / the crystal clear lakes of Chiapas / the spectacular landscapes of Chihuahua / the cultural mecca of Mexico City / the charming town of Orizaba / the 1950s charm of Acapulco / the quirkiness of Yelapa / the way the mountains meet the water in Puerto Vallarta / the buzz of students in Queretaro / the hippy mecca of San Cristobal / the whale sharks of Holbox

Or is it…….

The incredibly friendly people / the delicious food / the wonderful weather / the incredible diversity / the compelling history?

Or is it everything combined?  Is it the fact that I can be close to the US but feel like I am in a different world?  A world full of charming towns with cobblestone streets, gorgeous beaches, fascinating wildlife, soaring mountains, and friendly people.  A world that feels a lot like Europe but with an extra dose of warmth and hospitality.  A world where I felt welcome.

Luckily, this is just a short break and I will be back to Mexico soon.

Until then……I love you Mexico!
